Haunted Whitby Psyc?

Do you believe in ghosts? I'm not sure if I do. This weekend I again traveled to Whitby Psych, the abandoned mental institution, and I'm questioning my beliefs.

A friend of mine brought his digital camera and snapped a bunch of pics. We noticed some funny anomalies in some of the pictures. They were these little "orbs' that seemed to show up on the pictures. We didn't realize at the time because the viewfinder was so small.

All of these pictures were taken in virtual darkness. The Photographer (my friend Dave) had used this camera many other times under varying circumstances and swears that this is not a product of his camera.

Upon a little more thorough research, I found out that these "orbs" are quite common, and are considered by paranormal researchers to be evidence of other energies. I found another reference to them on the Coast to Coast AM website, scroll down the page a bit and check it out.

Here's a picture of the underground tunnels that connect all the buildings. Notice the random orbs down the tunnel.

I'm trying to stay logical and pragmatic in the way that I view this evidence. I've considered the possibility that these "orbs" are pieces of dust in the air that are refracting the light of the flash, and yet of the many pictures that were taken that night, only a few displayed this phenomenon. There is also the possibility that this is a characteristic of using digital cameras in the dark, or some other extrinsic factor. The question remains though, why here? Why not in any of the other places that he used his camera? We're going to do some experimenting to see if we can come up with an answer.
